The God Delusion
I’ve been reading The God Delusion by Richard Dawkins lately. Actually, I’m only half way through. In some respects, his arguments for atheism make sense to me. In others, they seem like esoteric ramblings. That whole bit about The Flying Spaghetti Monster. I have no idea what he is talking about.
The issues with Intelligent Design, particularly, the “Who designed the designer?” question, seem more than sensible. I’ve never bought the intelligent design argument, anyway.
It’s the obsession with the idea of evolution as being the most parsimonious and elegant theory. I may be showing my lack of understanding of the scientific method here, but why this obsession with elegance? There is so much in the world that isn’t elegant. I don’t expect any attempted explanation of it to be elegant or to account for its presence in the world.
Instead, I find this obsession with elegance distracting. And a bit small-minded. Maybe I will understand it better as I make my way through the book.
